Harrison Butker, the kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, has been one of the most reliable kickers in the NFL since coming into the league in 2017. In fact, he is second in NFL HISTORY in field goal percentage. In the first quarter of Super Bowl 58, San Francisco 49ers kicker Jake Moody made a 55-yard field goal, which set a Super Bowl record.
Butker had been on a hot streak this season. He made 12-12 field goal attempts that he had from 40+ yards out this season. He had already made a 28-yard field goal just before halftime. With the Chiefs facing a 4th and 6 from the 49ers 39-yard line, head coach Andy Reid had to make a choice. Having Butker at his disposal really paid off.
He had a kicker that he could rely on. From 57 yards out, this would break the record set by Moody just a quarter ago. But Reid didn’t hesitate for a minute. And Butker would come out to try to prove his head coach right. Butker looked calm and collected as always, drilling the field goal almost right down the middle. The history books for the longest field goal now belongs to Harrison Butker.
